The ideal time to resole your shoes is when the edge of the toe tip of the sole just starts to wear down to expose the thin rand underneath, before the rand starts to wear down. Sometimes, shoes have been climbed in for too long to be salvaged. A good rule of thumb is if you can see your toes through a hole in the front of the shoe, it cannot be fixed. Larger holes and tears are not repairable. The only exception is a small split at a seam on the toe, this can usually be sewn with a stich or two. If you are unsure, please feel free to text a picture and we'll let you know if a resole is possible.
You'll spend less if you get your shoes repaired in time, before they become too damaged.
No. The rand is glued to the shoe leather underneath sole. The sole must be replaced in order to repair the rand. The rand is only repaired if worn by 50% or more. At only 1.8mm thick, rand rubber usually needs to be repaired when the sole is replaced.
You can resole a good climbing shoe about 2-3 times if you resole regularly and follow the care suggestions. Caring for your shoes properly will greatly extend the life of your resole.
Climbing rubber is soft, its nothing like the bottom of your street shoes. The rubber is sticky and comes off on the rock – that is how you grip so well! Most soles wear out within 3 months of regular, aggressive climbing. If you get 6 months out of your climbing rubber then congratulations, you have developed some real precise footwork!
Climbing shoes use either a softer rubber for extra grip or a more firm rubber, for detailed edging and durability. We use Vibram XS Grip 2 or Vibram XS Edge rubber. Unless you request something specific, we follow the specs of your shoe manufacturer to dictate which of these types your shoe requires.
